Stephen "Steve" L. Berg

Dr. Stephen (Steve) Berg passed away peacefully on May 28, 2024, at the age of 78.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Hopkins Grove United Methodist Church (14605 NW Madrid Dr., Madrid, Iowa) with visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m.

He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on May 11, 1946, to Robert and Hazel Berg. He grew up in Shoreview, Minnesota, graduating from Mounds View High School in 1964. He attended the University of Minnesota where he met his future wife, Linda Hallquist. At university, he graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Doctor of Veterinary degrees in 1968 and 1970. Steve and Linda were married in 1969.

He practiced large animal veterinary medicine for six years before joining the United States Department of Agriculture, Food Safety Inspection Service in 1977. He retired in March 2007 after 31 years of service.

He and Linda appreciated traveling to many destinations frequently by cruise ship. Besides travel, he enjoyed reading and working on his model railroad which entertained generations.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Hazel Berg. He is survived by his wife, Linda (Hallquist) Berg; his children, Thor (Merrilyn) Berg in Austin, Minnesota, Carl (Heidi) Berg in Mason City, Iowa, and Kara (Michael) Goetz, in Minnetonka, Minnesota; four grandsons, Casey and Collin Berg, and Gunnar and Guthrie Goetz; his brothers, Paul Berg in Utrecht, Netherlands, and James (Sue) Berg, in Grantham, New Hampshire; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hopkins Grove United Methodist Church, Madrid, Iowa, or to a Veteran’s charity of the donor’s choice.
