I'm so saddened to hear of Maryl's passing.  We rode the same bus to school and hung out together in high school.  We were roommates in So Minneapolis while he attended the U of M.  He was a great cook, a devoted friend, a fine brother to his twin sister Marilynn, and an all around great guy.  We had many meaningful talks during our high school and college years.

After he joined the service (the Army I beleive) and went off to Viet Nam, we lost touch.  I regret that we were not able to reconnect.

My heartfelt codolences to his family.

Maryl was a good friend during high school (we played in band together) and for a time after his return from Viet Nam, he would stop by our apartment in Dinkytown with his dog. He was probably the only one of the few in our class who lived on a farm just north of North Oaks. Aftere high school, I remember his brother went into farming and his family moved to Pierz, MN.  He spent a year in Viet Nam after dropping out of college and he lugged around a mortar during his tour of duty (The Minneapolis Star published a picture of him slogging around in the jungle carrying his mortor and he was very recognizable, even though the picture was in black and white). I have long since lost that picture, even though I cut it out and saved it for some time.   When he returned, he stayed in touch during 1969 and 1970 and would occassionally drop by and we would drink some of my homemade beer and elderberry wine and talk into the night. He was quiet and thoughtful and seemed deeply affected by what he experienced on his tour of duty. I lost touch with him until the mid 70's when he returned from Alaska  and called me and we got together again. He would work for the Alaska highway department as a surveyor for part of the year and return to the lower 48 for the rest of the year. I tried to call him for our 50th and was able to get a phone number from his sister (a twin I believe) Marilyn,  and she gave me a number in Washington State but I was never able to connect with him after leaving several messages. I do not know if he served in the Army or the Marines. My memory is foggy, but I think he was one of those who was drafted into the Army and then was chosen to go into the marines, but not 100% sure. I will remember him as a gentle, always kind and thoughtful friend and I wish I would have made more of an effort to stay in touch with him over the years.

Maryl and I scratch built a model of the Shakespeare Globe Theater together in 10th or 11th grade. It went on display in the glass case in the hall outside the library and there was an article in the school paper about it. Maryl came to my house several times to help build, and we really got along well- very much on the same wavelength. He had a great sense of humor and always a positive friendly person. I would love to have seen him at one of the reunions and had a conversation.      Jeff Poehler

I didn't know Maryl real well during our MVHS days, but remember him as a smart, nice guy.
